Africa Scrabble Championship 2012

The ninth Africa Scrabble Championship is set to kick off next week starting on 21st to 25th November. The event will be held in Fairmount Hotel Livingstone Zambia.


Defending Champions Nigeria will face stiff challenge from power houses Kenya, South Africa, Uganda and the Hosts [Zambia].

Kenya's team of fourteen will jet out of the country on Monday in two batches. All players are expected to be at the venue latest Tuesday morning before the registration and opening ceremony on Wednesday.

Gitonga Nderitu is expected to lead seasoned World championship campaigners Manase Otieno, Willy Mwangi, Patrick Litunya and Allan Oyende as Kenya seeks to dethrone Nigeria.

Nicholas Mbugua fresh from a top ten finish in the Godwill Akpabio Classics is ready for another go at the Nigerians.
Joseph Chavutia, Stanley Njoroge, David Kangethe, Charles Kariuki are the other heavy weights in the team
Tobias Outi [Inter University Champion] and Martins Mutahi are the youthful players to watch. Cecilia Ruto will be back to defend her best female player title.

BARCLAYS BANK NATIONAL SCRABBLE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

BANKABLE WORDS ANYONE?
This weekend Kenya's to word smiths converge at Barclays Bank Sports Club in Ruaraka Nairobi the national championship. The event is part of a series of qualifiers to select team Kenya to African Scrabble Championship to be held in Livingstone Zambia in November. Current national Champion Gitonga Nderitu of Muranga will face strong challenge from Allan Oyende of Visa club Nairobi and his world championship team mate Litunya of Machakos. 
All eyes will be on Home boy favourite Isaiah Maloba as he pits his wits against the best in East Africa. The event is sponsored by Barclays Bank. Scrabble kenya will use the event to prepare players intending to contest for slots in team kenya to World youth Scrabble championship in UK. This will see Riabai and Nkoroi high school fielding teams. Competing for top honors in two divisions will be teams from VISA club, Mt. Kenya region, Nakuru, Migori, Homabay, Machakos, Busia, Kisumu. Universities[UoN, KU, Moi, JKUAT, Strathmore and Egerton] will also field teams.
When the last tile has been played and the tile bag lies collapsed in a wrinkled heap on the table after game 18 on sunday, the top 3 players in both divisions will get trophies and cash prizes as division 1 players battle for 10 slots slots in team Kenya.

Stima - Madaraka National Tournament 2nd-3rd June 2012

Scrabble Kenya would like to invite all Scrabble Players of different age groups and mastery to a national event on the weekend of 2nd to 3rd June, 2012 in Nairobi. The venue will be the Stima Club –  Ruaraka. The field will be split into two divisions [Division 1: players rated >1400, Division2: all new players and players rated <1400]. Division 1 players will register with Ksh. 1,000, Division 2 with Ksh. 500 and students Ksh. 250. TSH will be in use and 18 games will be played.

The event is a qualifier to ASC in Zambia later in the year.

Mt. KENYA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP - QUALIFYING ROUND FOR PANASA SCRABBLE CHAMPIONSHIP


Scrabble Kenya would like to invite all Scrabble Players of different age groups and mastery to a national event on the weekend of 5th to 6th May, 2012 in Nyeri. The venue will be Makutiland Hotel
  • The hotel is located in Ruring'u surbub on the Nyeri - Nairobi highway. Coming from Nairobi direction it is on your right at about 100 meters from Triton petrol station and next to a timber yard. If you travel by public means from Nairobi direction tell them to drop you at "meeting point"and the hotel is directly opposite and identifiable by its makuti features. If you are in Nyeri town public transport is available outside Gospel outreach church next to dedan kimathi kamukunji grounds and the police lines. You will tell them to drop you at "meeting point"and the entrance to the hotel is just a few meters from the stage.
The field will be split into two divisions [Division 1: players rated >1400, Division2: all new players and players rated <1400]. 18 games will be played. The event is a qualifier to ASC later in the year. TSH pairing system will be used.

The venue will be NANAZI PARADISE RESORT. This will be an open tournament, 18 games will be played. The event is a qualifier to ASC later in the year.
