Oyende implodes, Maloba explodes as Gitonga reigns in Nanazi

Scrabble kenya held its sixth & final qualifier for ECASA championships at The Nanazi hotel Thika. The hotel management provided trophies for winners, prize money and meals for players during the two day event. Gitonga Nderitu totally dominated the field in division 1 wrapping the championship with two rounds to go fending off stiff challenge from Stanley Njoroge and perennial WSC campaigner Litunya. The Nanazi defending champion fred Magu meekly surrendered His title. National champion Oyende had a tournament to forget as he wilted under pressure, his 163 score move of KERATOID couldn't save him. Gitonga had the highest game score of 606.รก

In division 2 Isaiah Maloba of Barclays bank won his first event in his carrier. He started the final day a game adrift of day one pace setter and winner of Abba invitational Muema Muumbi. He reeled in the leader and saw off the challenge from top rated Mwiti [first player to be relegated from premier division 1], Metir and Gachomo Maina. With a three way tie on 13 wins he won the title on superior spred. With 35 Bonuses he was declared the bingo merchant.

Top three finishers received trophies in each division with cash prizes awarded up to position 5 in both divisions. The event had the highest attendance of the year of 60 players.

At the end of the event a Giant trophy was unveiled to be contested in a single open division event on 21-22/4/12. See the results here.
